Acquisitions and Donations

Since the Friends of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya was founded, we have given 8 works to the Museum, thereby contributing to the expansion and enrichment of their collection. Our contributions comprise 1 painting by Edvard Munch, 2 paintings by Josep Togores, 1 painting by Joan Brull, 2 paintings by Enric Galwey, 1 drawing by Joan Llimona and 1 drawing by Marià Fortuny. The latter, The Prayer, was added in 2013 as the result of a crowdfunding project, which received contributions from over 240 patrons.

We have also worked closely with the MNAC to bring to fruition the inclusion of Woman in Hat and Fur Collar by Pablo Picasso (1937), the Romanesque mural Dispute and Arrest of Saint Catherine from the cathedral La Seu d’Urgell (mid-13th century) and the painting Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu in a Motor Car by Ramon Casas (1901).

Thanks to the contributions of over 3,000 Friends and the companies that support the Friends of the MNAC Foundation, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya acquired two exceptional works: Old Couple, by Carles Casagemas (1900-1901), one of his best-known miserabilist works, and the oil painting Skull, by Josep Guinovart (1954), which is from the artist’s figurative period and uniquely bears a female portrait on the opposite side.

In 2018, two sets of works of contrasting artistic quality were acquired. They will be part of the postwar Catalan art collection and the second avant-garde: a set of three works by Mari Chordà (1942) and a set of four original drawings by Enric Sió (1942-1998).

In november 2019 we acquired the textile piece Fountain of life,  by Aurèlia Muñoz (Barcelona, 1926-2011), catalan artist internationally recognized as a contemporary textile art's pioneer.
